Lip Service Returns!

Lip service returned for the summer semester last week, and I had a pleasant surprise: two new co-hosts! We spoke about Sarah Palin's "new conservative feminism" : is she co-opting the term feminism to make her more popular or is she being sincere? Tell us what you think!

We plugged Queerbomb, which will be held tonight at The Independent which is located on the east side of I35 at 501 Brushy St.

We also plugged Austin's 1st Annual Pride Run, a 5K starting at the Long center tomorrow at 9 am.

Next week we will continue our discussion on "new conservative feminism" and hetero- and homonormative ideals.

Feminist Action Project

The Feminist Action Project is a new group on campus working with the Gender and
Sexuality Center to put on a conference about feminist activism. We will be spending
three days in April workshopping projects, learning about feminist organizing, and
connecting with other like-minded folks! We've got some new things happening...

First and foremost, we have a website / blog up and running. It is
http://feministactionproject.blogspot.com/. There you will be able to register, download
our call for submissions, meet the committee members and snag some sneak peeks of
programming we have planned.

Second, we've extended our call for submission deadline! Many folks have talked about
really great workshops/panels they'd like to do at the conference, and we've received
many great submissions, so we want to make sure that everyone gets a chance to submit!

Tonight we talked to two of the TXRD Lonestar Roller Girls, Smarty and Miso. They explained to us the difference between banked track and flat track derby. We also talked about the history of roller derby.

Roller Derby, Texas-style
Founded in 2001 in Austin,Texas by She-EOs Anya Jack, April Herman, Heather Burdick and Nancy Lynn, TXRD Lonestar Rollergirls was started with a vision of outrageous production value and fabulous women on skates. The Lonestar Rollergirls are local favorite daughters as well as a hearty entertainment staple, perfectly blending the "Keep Austin Weird" attitude with a free-wheeling pursuit of fun and competition, with rocking local music thrown in for good measure.
High Impact
Primarily composed of women between the ages of 21 and 40+, the Lonestar Rollergirls embody a "do-it-yourself" attitude, pooling their resources and varied skill sets to keep their league up and rolling. With 10+ committees and an elected governing body, these women have fought to build their organization from the ground up, never taking an official loan and keeping the majority of league responsibilities in-house. The same work ethic continues to pervade the league today, as the rollergirls look to the future and plot the course for where the next five years will take them. Their plans are big and their dreams even bigger, and there is no doubt that these women will continue to impact Austin, and beyond, in a serious way.
Teams
We currently have five teams: The Hellcats (50's-style vixens who love their hotrods and switchblades), The Putas Del Fuego (Cholas with a taste for blood and tequila), The Holy Rollers (the baddest bullies in the Sacred Heart schoolyard), The Rhinestone Cowgirls (Texas fillies that offer up the best in country-fried violence), and the Cherry Bombs (ruthless Rock 'n' Roll misfits run amuck).
The History
The Lonestar Rollergirls' first public bout was seen by approximately 400 spectators. By season's end, crowd attendance had reached 1,300, with hundreds having to be turned away at the door. Now, as the 80-member skater-owned and operated league hits its fifth anniversary, the sport of roller derby has grown in incredible leaps and bounds, as has the amount of involvement that each skater puts into this business.
In 2003, TXRD purchased an original roller derby banked track, making them the first all-girl league to ever skate on a banked track. TXRD has sparked a roller derby revival and can be directly connected to new leagues springing up in cities around the world, from the Cayman Islands, Phoenix, Los Angeles, Chicago and New York.

This week we talked to our friend Ben about his experience coming out in college. He spoke on his experience being gay in a small Texas town. We discussed the importance of tolerance and understanding, even toward people who are less-than-tolerant of the gay community. Zoja, Rocky, and I explored the importance of understanding the population's mainstream conception of a "gender binary" and how we don't quite fit in with that conception although we are straight, white women. We informed the audience of UT's Gender and Sexuality center and we spoke on what it is to be an ally.

Tonight we are going to be interviewing Sheeva Marvdashti and Cayce Smith from Global Health Project. Global health Project is a small group at UT dedicated to improving the conditions of Nicaraguan health care. In January, the group will be visiting the interior of the country (Chinandega) and an island on the Carribean side of the country - Blue Flowers. They will be working with a womens clinic on the island and a community clinic in Chinandega. They plan to bring much needed medical supplies to the country and help in any way they can during their stay.

Amanda Tilger, an artist from my hometown of Rowlett, TX and a personal best friend of mine, has been an inspiration to me for as long as I've known her. Over the years her art has evolved from pastel colorings and more simple paintings into breathtaking watercolors of sometimes nameless, and always nearly faceless women. Finally, she has put some of her art up for sale on the open market, and you can check it out HERE!

Jensen's homage to Dworkin

Now that I'm on Christmas break I finally have time to read again, so I've been tearing through Robert Jensen's Getting Off: Pornography and the End of Masculinity. I was a bit skeptical at first, but the book is actually less moralistic and personal than I had expected it to be. Jensen essentially targets society's expectations of a socially constructed masculinity as the source of violence and woman-hate within pornography. Rather than placing blame on any one group, he asks that we move away from masculinity toward a world where we can simply be human.

Jensen was very much inspired by Andrea Dworkin, one of my favorite radical feminist authors and activists. Many people (feminists included) think that Dworkin was too bold, too offensive, and too radical, but I think otherwise. The only real feminism is radical feminism--fuck sugarcoating the issues to appease the mainstream. Dworkin was an activist who spoke out and acted against rape, domestic abuse, and pornography. She fought adamantly against the left-wing liberals and libertarians who insisted that porn was about freedom and self-expression, an argument that I have never been able to comprehend. One of my favorite quotes from her sums up my bewilderment totally: "In pornography we literally see the will of women as men want to experience it." As long as we live in a patriarchal society, porn will never reflect the true sexuality, experiences, desires, thoughts, hopes, dreams, will of women.

The ladies and I will be reading our own writing as well as pieces that have inspired us tonight on the show! I will be reading some of Jensen and Dworkin, so be sure to listen in!
